Question
Question 1 (14 marks)
A feathered badminton shuttle in general is able to travel from the back
boundary line of one side of the court to the back boundary line of
the opposite side with a full overhand swing from an average player.
The production manager of a shuttle manufacturer wonders whether
the newly designed synthetic shuttles produced can travel as far as
feathered shuttles. Two hundred synthetic shuttles are randomly selected
and the distances they travelled were recorded after shooting out from a
machine with the strength tuned to be equivalent to an average player.
a With regard to the above survey, identify the following items:
• The population
• The concerned population parameter
• The sample
• The sample statistics to be studied (10 marks)
b A normal badminton shuttle weighs around 4.95 to 5.05 grams and
a shuttle is considered not acceptable if its weight falls outside of
this range. Which population parameter(s) might possibly reflect the
level of acceptability of the weight of the synthetic shuttles?
(4 marks)
Explanation / Answer
(a) Population would be total collection of all all synthetic shuttles who would be used for playing badminton.
Population parameter = Population mean
Sample would be those who would be chosen to measure the distance travelled under the survey.
Statistics would be sample mean, sample size, sample standard deviation.
(b) Probability to accept woould be - P ( 4.95 < X < 5.05 )
This probability will depend on the standard deviation of the sample values and hence will affect the acceptability of the weight of the synthetic shuttles.
