Question
When you stated in your response that "In the early days of electronic commerce, many companies undertook electronic commerce projects without evaluating their costs and benefits in detail because they feared being left out of the Internet boom" you were absolutely correct. The fear of being left behind by your competition is a huge motivation for many companies. This motivation can be a negative factor for many companies because it indicates that action might be taken without consideration for any negative aspects.
So, while this primarily is attributable to first wave Internet actions, do you think it still happens today with the second wave? Please explain why or why not when you respond
Explanation / Answer
This is not true. If you look at the biggest topics of technologies which are in the news today it is either Big Data/Cloud, Artificial Intelligence or Virtual Reality. Companies these days are much smarter in shifting to these technologies only if there is a valid business case for it.
With regards to Big Data many companies currently don't generate that amount of data to actually migrate to these technologies and their purposes can be served by localized server storage which will serve them just fine but the mindset of shifting to Cloud in the future remains. A company in this decade ( post 2010) looks carefully at the ROI of a technology implementation before installing it.
With regards to current trends like AI/VR , not enough use cases exist for each industry so that they can be adopted on a wide scale. So we will have to wait further for that.
