Question
Determine whether the random variable is discrete or continuous. In each case, state the possible values of the random variable (a) The number of people with blood type A in a random sample of 10 people. (b) The amount of rain in City B during April. (a) Is the number of people with blood type A in a random sample of 10 people discrete or continuous? A. The random variable is discrete. The possible values are x = 0, 1, 2, , 10. O B. The random variable is continuous. The possible values are x =0, 1, 2, , 10. ° C. The random variable is continuous. The possible values are 0 xs 10. 0 D. The random variable is discrete. The possible values are 0 xs 10. (b) Is the amount of rain in City B during April discrete or continuous? 0 A. The random variable is continuous. The possible values are r = 1, 2, 3, Click to select your answerExplanation / Answer
Answer to the question is :
a. In part A the no. of peoeple that can have blood type a A can be a discrete /exact number and will not
be a continours/fractional number. Hence, the random variable is discrete. The possible values are x = 0,1,2,3..10
The r.v. is not continous.
Hence, the answer is A, different from D, where althought the options says that random variable is discrete, but wrongly says that the poosible values are represented as 0<=x<10. The true way to represented as 0<=X<=10
c. The amount of rain can be any number, it need not be a discrete variable. and hence is a continous variable
Hence, the random variable is continous, the possible bvalues are r= 0<=x<10
