Explanation / Answer

The restaurant owners in Houston have been badly hit with the 50 inches of rain in just 72 hours during Harvey. Restaurant owners were not able to open their restaurants even after one month of Harvey. The intense and relentless rain left with 4 feet of standing water. Damaged interior and exterior designs, floating furniture, damaged artworks, antiques, torn costly carpets after getting wet for days together, damage to perishable food ingredients are some of the big losses in the restaurants.

Lessons learned during Harvey are:

1. Precautionary measures to get less affected in a flood-prone area i.e.Houston.

2. Lack of floodplain regulations for controlling flooding

3. Non- Usage of waterproofs appliances caused huge damages

4. Waterproofs carpets, furniture, rust-free utensils etc.

5. Lack of flooding insurance

5. Lack of Water management procedures

6. Wastage of thousands of pounds of food

Contingency plan for Risk management:

1. Knowledgeable and expert employees who can carry out flood plan before actual disruption by the flood.

2. Developed flood plan with verified results.

3. Emergency Drills y employees at least twice in a year.

4. Adherence to flood safety equipment.

5. Business continuity plans.

6. Flood warning and mitigation plans conveyed to all employees.

Recommendations to other owners:

1. Issuance of flood messages

2. Waterproof electrical equipment

3. All Property insurance coverage

4. Turning off electricity, gas, and water switches from the main switch or main breakers.

5. Staffs should be properly trained
