Problem 2: The results of a 1967 study by the National Center for Health Statistics is shown in the table below (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_11/sr11_ 022.pdf) Table A. Mean serum cholesterol levels and standard deviations of the population distribution for adults, by sex and age: United States, 1960-62 Men Women Age 1S tandaraMean-deviation 1 Standard Mean-|dev.iation 40.7 184.7 44.6 197.9 49.4213.6 45.6 236.8 49.0262.3 47.3| 265.7 48.7245.3 47.9 41.9 45.3 50.0 63.0 58.8 65.7 205.9 226.8 5-44 years 5-54 years 65-74 years ---224.5 Mg. per 100 ml Consider that the distribution of cholesterol levels is normal with means and standard deviations given above. Determine the percentage of males aged 65-74 who have a cholesterol level above 240 mg/100 ml. Determine the percentage of females aged 45-54 who have a cholesterol level above 240 mg/100 ml. a) b)Explanation / Answer
a) Percentage of males aged 65 - 74 who have a Cholesterol level above 240 mg/ 100 ml
= P(X > 240)
= P(z > (240 - 229.5)/47.3)
= P(z > 0.22)
= 0.4122
So,
The answer is 41.22%
b) P(X > 240)
= P(z > (240 - 236.8)/50)
= P(z > 0.064)
= 0.4745
So,
The answer is 47.45%
