Explanation / Answer
Correlation describes the strength of association between two variables.
Having the basic concepts clear, we now can derive the solution for the given question:
a)between this semester’s GPA and the previous semester’s GPA of an upper- class student is about
Ans: r=0.8 . It is highly likely that if a student has performed well in the previous semester , he/she is pursue characteristics of a high performer, i.e. sincere, hardworking and/or talented and thereby will continue to perform in the same manner. Thus, the correlation is highly positive.
(b) between IQ and the scores on a test of the reading ability of seventh-grade students is about .
Ans: r=0.5 . If the reading ability of a seventh-grade student is good, he/she will be able able to better comprehend spot patterns, observe trends therby showing a higher level of intelligence. Since this may not always be the case since IQ is also a trait of an individual person , thus the correlation is postive here but not moderately strong.
c) between the number of hours a student spends studying per week and the average number of hours spent studying by his or her roommates is about .
Ans: r=0.2 . The company around us do effect our behaviour and lifestyle. So, the roommate will be affected by the hours you study. Thus there is positive correlation. But the relation is very weak, beacuse here we are talking about two different people which have their individual traits, intelligence, preferences, aims, lifestyle, study schedule etc.
