2. 100 people went to a picnic. 32 people got sick with food poisoning. The Public Health Department narrowed it down to either the chicken salad or the cream pie. They determined that 80 people ate chicken salad 75 people ate cream pie "33 people ate chicken salad cream pie and did not get sick " 5 ate neither food and did not get sick. 40% of the people who, ate chicken salad got sick 36% of the people whd are cream pie got sick * Was it the chicken salad or the cream pie?Explanation / Answer
Let, A: Number of people ate chicken salad
B: Number of people ate cream pia
n(A)=80
n(B)=75
There are five people who did not ate anything
n(AUB)'=5 ==> n(AUB)=100-5=95
We know that:
n(AUB)=n(A)+n(B)-n(AnB)
95 = 80 + 75 - n(AnB)
n(AnB) = 60
Hence, there were 60 people who ate both chicken salad and cream pie, out of which 33 were not sick. Means remaining 27 were sick.
On the other hand we are given that 40% f people who ate chicken salad got sick ie. 32 people who ate chicken salad got sick.
This means chicken salad was the main factor causing food poision.
