(Round your answers up to the nearest integer.) (a) what sample size is necessary if the 95% CI for p is to have a width of at most 0.17 irrespective of p? 35 X people (b) If the legislator has strong reason to believe that at leastof the electorate know of her position, how large a sample size would you recommend to maintain a width of at most 0.17? 30 x people You may need to use the appropriate table in the Appendix of Tables to answer this question. Explanation / Answer

Solution:- Given that width (w) = 0.17

Formula :- n = (2*Z*(sqrt(pq)/w))^2 by using w
95% confidence interval for Z = 1.96

a) irrespective of p = q = 0.5

n = (2*1.96*(sqrt(0.5*0.5)/0.17))^2
= 132.92
= 133

b) p = 4/5 = 0.8 , q = 1 - p = 0.2

n = (2*1.96*(sqrt(0.8*0.2)/0.17))^2
n = 85.07
n = 85
