Question

Using TI-83/84 Calculator solve A study was conducted by the U.S. Army to see if applying antiperspirant to soldiers' feet for a few days before a major hike would help cut down on the number of blisters soldiers had on their feet. In the experiment, for three nights before they went on a 13-mile hike, a group of 328 West Point cadets put an alcohol-based antiperspirant on their feet. A "control group" of 339 soldiers put on a similar, but inactive, preparation on their feet. On the day of the hike, the temperature reached 83° F. At the end of the hike, 21% of the soldiers who had used the antiperspirant and 48% of the control group had developed foot blisters. Conduct a hypothesis test to see if the percent of soldiers using the antiperspirant was significantly lower than the control group. Explanation / Answer

n1 = 328 , p1 = 0.21 , n2 = 339 ,p2 = 0.48

x1 = n1*p1 = 328*0.21 = 69

x2 = n2*p2 = 163

Null and alternative hypothesis is

H0: P1 = P2 Vs H1: P1 < P2

Level of significance = 0.05

ti-84 path is

Click on STAT --------> TESTS -------> 2-PropZTest --------> Enter values

x1: 69

n1: 328

x2: 163

n2: 339

p1:< p2

Calculate

z = - 7.331

P-value = 0.000

P-value < 0.05 we reject null hypothesis.

Conclusion: The percent of soldiers using the antiperspirant was significantly lower than the control group.
