You think that bottomland areas tend to be moister and have higher nutrient levels, and that might lead to greater production of wheat. You select 11 fields: 5 in bottomland areas and 6 in upland areas and plant both with wheat. At the end of the season, you record yield in bushels/ha. When you examine your data, they are normal but have unequal variances.

Explanation / Answer

The statistical test to be used here is the t test for difference of means (As there are only 2 sets being compared) with unequal variances.

Let µ1 be the average yield of wheat in bottomland areas .

Let µ2 be the average yield of wheat in upland areas.

The Hypothesis:

H0: µ1 = µ2 : The average yield of wheat in bottomland areas is equal to the average yield of wheat in upland areas.

Ha: µ1 > µ2: The average yield of wheat in bottomland areas is greater than the average yield of wheat in upland areas.

This is a one tailed, right tailed test.
