Explanation / Answer

a). Let us fit a simple regression model between Microsoft and S&P500 Index, using Excel Analysis Tool Pack.

The resulting Regression Coefficients, t-values and p-values are given below:

Since the P-value for the regression coefficient is < 0.01, the regression is significant at 99% confidence level.

Hence Microsoft is significantly related to S&P 500.

b) Similarly let us fit a simple regression model between Microsoft and FTSE 100 Index.

The results are given below:

Here also, since the P-value for the regression coefficient is < 0.01, the regression is significant at 99% level.

Hence Microsoft is significantly related to FTSE 100.

c) Let us next fit a simple regression model between Microsoft and Hang Seng Index.

The results are given below:

Again, since the P-value for the regression coefficient is < 0.01, the regression is significant at 99% level.

Hence Microsoft is significantly related to the Hang Seng Index.

d) The coefficientf determination of Microsoft against each of the above indices is given below:

S&P 500 0.5573

FTSE 100 0.3111

Hang Seng 0.2973

From the above values it clear that Microsoft significantly depends on all 3 major indices of the global economy.

However, the dependence on S&P 500 (US Economy) is much higher than the other 2 Indices.
