Question
9. An investigator would like to test if a new pain reliever works well compared to the standard medication. Knowing that the pain scores from 10 study subjects in each group receiving the new treatment or the standard medication are not symmetrically distributed, what statistical method do you recommend to compare the two treatments? Name the test.
10. In an animal study, 60 mice were ordered to receive three treatments A, B and C for weight loss. If the mice were found to be from 2 different biotech companies (30 from each) and are potentially different, what kind of study design do you recommend to test if the three treatments A, B and C are the same? Write out your model.
15. For given a 2x2 table with the risk factor exposure and the disease status of a group of subjects, how do you calculate the expected value of each cell? (use a table with cell counts a, b, c, and d to illustrate the test expected values of the cells). Specify the null and alternative hypotheses for testing the association between the risk factor and the disease development for cohort studies. Specify the null and the alternative hypotheses for case-control studies.

9)
Since distribution is not symmetrically distributed and sample size is small, parametric method is not appropriate.
We have to use nonparametric method to compare two groups- Mann–Whitney U test. The Mann-Whitney U test is used to compare differences between two independent groups when the dependent variable is either ordinal or continuous, but not normally distributed.
