Question

A company that manufactures steel wires guarantees that , the mean breaking strength (in kilonewtons) of the wires is greater than 50. The quality control inspector takes a sample of wires and measures their strength to test Ho : = 50 versus Ha : > 50. 4. a. If Type I error is made, what conclusion was drawn regarding the mean breaking strength? b. Describe consequences of Type I error in this situation. c. If Type II error is made, what conclusion was drawn regarding the mean breaking strength? Describe consequences of Type II error in this situation. This test uses one-tailed alternate hypothesis. Explain why a one-tailed hypothesis is more appropriate than a two-tailed hypothesis in this situation. d. e.

Explanation / Answer

In statistical hypothesis testing, a type I error is the incorrect rejection of a true null hypothesis (also known as a "false positive" finding), while a type IIerror is incorrectly retaining a false null hypothesis (also known as a "false negative" finding).

a) If type 1 error is made conclusion is that mean breaking strength is greater than 50.

b) Consequence is we assume that mean breaking strength is greater than 50. but in fact it is not greater than 50. So, this might result in several accidents.

c) If type 1 error is made conclusion is that mean breaking strength is less than 50.

d) Consequence is we assume that mean breaking strength is less than 50. but in fact it is greater than 50. So, the company might think it needs to produce better brakes and thus not deploy these and result in loss of revenues and increase in expenditure.

e) Because we want to know if strength is greater or less than 50. In two tail we will just know if the strength differs from 50 or not. This wont serve any purpose for the company.
