Question

Provide a simple explanation of hypothesis testing. Your explanation needs to be so simple that a fifth grader can understand it. Make sure your explanation does not include any statistical jargon. Your explanation must be age-appropriate and not use any words that would be beyond the abilities of a fifth grader.

Use the following template that (you will fill in the blank sections) researchers have found successful in explaining complex concepts to children.

Your submission should consist of four items (follow the prompts):

Definition: What is a hypothesis test? Explain in one short sentence.

Long example/Personal experience: How would a fifth graders relate to a hypothesis test? What experiences in their life can be related to this concept?

Compare/Contrast: Is there anything that a hypothesis test can easily be confused with? What is it NOT? Remember that your fifth grader still needs to be able to relate to these examples.

Short example(s)/Application: Are there any other areas that could make hypothesis tests a useful concept for fifth graders? You can also push their limits and provide examples of how people in different professions use this concept.

How your writing will be evaluated (your submission should consist of 250-500 words total):

30 points: each section of the template is filled, explanation and information are sufficient for a fifth grader, there is no jargon.

20 points: each section of the template is filled, but information is insufficient, there is no jargon

10 point: all sections of the template are filled, but information is insufficient, there is some jargon

0 points: some sections of the template are unfilled, there is much jargon

Explanation / Answer

What is a hypothesis?

A hypothesis is an educated guess based on information you already know

For example: For example one might wanna understand the relationship between playing video game and motor reflexes.. So it can be hypothesized that those kids who play more video games will have better motor reflexes.
Now the next step is testing this hypothesis.. There are many many methods available to test whether the hypothesis holds true or not. Like experiments, survey, correlation, etc etc..Based o the tests, hypothesis is either accepted or rejected.

Hypothesis Explained in detail:

A hypothesis should always:

For Example I need to tet for food getting bad. When food goes bad mould can grow on it. If you put a piece of bread, one strawberry, piece of chocolate and a cup of yogurt in a dark cupboard. Which food will go bad?

So now I create a hypothesis based on my past experience or knowledge. Like

Chocolate doesn't go bad first as I know last year i forgot my chocolte bar in my school bag and after returning from holdays 1 week later, I found chocolate good to eat

Strawberries, since they are grown outside, so I think dark cupboard will not be good for them.

Since i never saw a mould on yogurt, but accidentally once i had a bread with yogurt having a sall nould on it.

So therefore based on my past experiences I create a hypothesis that:

Hypothesis- Either bread or yogurt can go bad first if put in a dark cupboard.

Experiment:

Now I put all our items in a dark cupboard at the same time. I kept a 12 hour time frame to check for mould on the food. So after every 12 hors i need to chck for muld on the food.

Since i kept checking for mould on food after every 12 hours.

What i found after 36 hours that bread got some white mould on it. This conclude that bread gets bad first if ket in dark place. This establishes a hypothesis that bread goes bad first compared to other food items.

Continuing the experiment for some more days will help conclude when other food items go bad.

Some examples for a 5th grader where he/she can use hypothesis could be:

Bread Yougrt Strawberry Chocolate after 1st 12 hrs no no no no after 2nd 12 hrs i.e., after 24 hrs no no no no after 3rd 12 hrs i.e., after 36 hrs yes no no no
