Question
A random sample of ten (10) male undergraduate students attending Howard University was asked their height and weight. You analyzed those data and found that there was a 0,96 association between height and weight. (a) Test the hypothesis that there was no relationship between height and weight at = 0.05. (b) What proportion of the variation in one variable can be explained by the variation in the other variable (be specific in your answer). (c) Make a statistical decision and write a one- sentence conclusion for (a) and (b) above.Explanation / Answer
Here sample size = 10
so here association r = 0.96 between height and weight variable
(a) H0 : = 0
Ha : 0
Here test statistic
t = r sqrt [(n-2)/ (1 -r2)]
t = 0.96 * sqrt [ (10 -2)/ (1 - 0.962)]
t = 9.697
here dF = 10-2 = 8 and alpha = 0.05
tcritical = t8,0.05 = 2.306
so here t > tcritical
so we shall reject the null hypothesis and can say that correlation is significant tere.
(b) here 96% or 0.96 proportion of the variation in one variable is can be explianed by the variation in other variable.
(c) Here there is a significant positive correlation between height and weight of students where 96% of variation of one variable can be explained by the other variable.
