Question 2.5 (PRACTICAL JOKES ARE NOT GOOD) A two way classification of record of deaths due to a disease, shocks, heart attacks and without heart attacks in a hospital is given in Heart Attacks DG10 the Table. Andy's uncle Mr. Bob had a disease and the doctor had recommended him Without Heart Attacks 455 a bed rest. Andy was interested to play with his uncle, so he wants to make him wakeup. In such an interest, Andy explodes a bomb near his sleeping chair. Unfortunately, his uncle Mr. Bob died. Doctor's postmortem report shows that Mr. Bob died due to a heart attack. Deaths Disease Shocks Fig. 2.5. Andy and his uncle ( a ) What is the conditional probability he died due to shock created by Andy's bomb? (b) Are the events "Shocks" and "Heart Attacks" independent? Justify your answer.Explanation / Answer
Solution-
(a) Required probability = P( shock | heart attack )
= P( shock and heart attack ) / P( heart attack )
= (10/391) / ( 341/391)
= 10/341
= 0.0293
(b) We will calculate the probability of shock.
ie. P( shock ) = 15 /391
= 0.0384
We know that if two avents A and B are independent then P(A|B) = P(B)
But here P(shock|heart attack) is not equal to P(shock)
Hence shocks and heart attacks are not independent.
