Question

claim. 7. Dreaming in Black and White A study was conducted to determi people who dream in black and white instead of color. Among 306 people over the age o 68 dream in black and white, and among 298 people under the age of 25, 13 dream in black and white (based on data from "Do We Dream in Color?" by Eva Murzyn, Consciousnes and ine the proportion of f s Cognition, Vol. 17, No. 4). We want to use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the proportion of people over 55 who dream in black and white is greater than the proportion for those under 25.

Explanation / Answer

R code:

> prop.test(c(68,13),c(306,298),alt="greater",conf.level=0.9)

2-sample test for equality of proportions with continuity correction

data: c(68, 13) out of c(306, 298)
X-squared = 39.947, df = 1, p-value = 1.305e-10
alternative hypothesis: greater
90 percent confidence interval:
0.1412626 1.0000000
sample estimates:
prop 1 prop 2
0.22222222 0.04362416

Since the p-value is too small, we reject the null hypothesis in favour of the alternative hypothesis and conclude that the proportion of people over age 55 dreaming black and white is significantly greater than the proportion of people under the age 25 dreaming black and white.
