Explanation / Answer
a) Valles Marineris is the largest system of canyons on the planet Mars. It is more than 4000 km long, 200 km wide and up to 7 km deep which makes it one of the larger canyons in the solar system. It is located along the equator of Mars and covers for nearly a quarter of the planet’s circumference.
b) The planet Mars has two permanent polar ice caps, namely the northern and southern ice caps. The caps at both poles consist primarily of water ice. The northern polar cap has a diameter of about 1000 km during the northern Mars summer, and contains about 1.6 million cubic km of ice, which if spread evenly on the cap would be 2 km thick. The southern polar cap has a diameter of 350 km and a thickness of 3 km and it too is estimated to contain 1.6 million cubic km of ice.
c) Olympic Mons is a volcanic mountain on Mars. It stands at a height of about 22 km which makes it the tallest mountain in the Solar system. The volcano is located in Mars's western hemisphere and it is believed to be the result of many thousands of highly fluid, basaltic lava flows that poured from volcanic vents over a long period of time.
d) As mentioned above, almost all the water that exists today on Mars is in the form of ice in the polar caps. Apart from that, there are low quantities of water vapor in the Martian atmosphere. It is believed that Mars had abundant water very the past. As evidence, it has been found that a fraction of this water is retained on modern Mars as both ice and locked into the structure of abundant water-rich materials, including clay minerals and sulfates. Another evidence comes from studying the meteorites that originate in Mars. Some of them contain evidence that they were exposed to water when on Mars.
