Question
In addition to answering the question, could you please include a simple diagram of the problem? I'd like to be able to both understand the answer numerically and visually. Thank you for your help - I always rate thumbs-up for help.
11. Katie Cool buys a fancy Jaguar car that can accelerate at the rate of 4.9 m/sec2. She decides to test the car by racing with another speedster, Steve Speedy. Both start from rest, but experienced Stan leaves the starting line 1.0 sec before Katie. Steve moves with a constant acceleration of 3.5 m/sec2 and Katie maintains an acceleration of 4.9 m/sec2. Find: (5.46,73.0,22.6&26.7) (a) the time at which Katie overtakes Steve (b) the distance she travels before she catches him (c) the speeds of both cars at the instant she overtakes himExplanation / Answer
distance already ahead when katie starts=0.5*3.5*1.0^2=1.75
velocity of his at that point=3.5*1.0=3.5 m/s
now katie starts
1.75+3.5*t+0.5*3.5*t^2=0.5*4.9*t^2
1.75+3.5*t+1.75*t^2=2.45*t^2
t=5.4580 s
thats the ans
so distance travelled would be (5.4580+1.00)^2*1/2*3.5=72.985 mts
speed of katie's car=5.4580*4.9=26.744 m/s
speed of stans car=6.4580*3.5=22.603 m/s
