Question

A swimming pool is 10 t wide and 20 t long and its bottom is an inclined plane, the shall wend having a depth of 3 tan water. (Round your answers to the nearest whole number. Recall that the weight density of water is 62.5 lb/ft.) the dee e io . Assume the oo S ful· (a) Estimate the hydrostatic force on the shallow end 2813 lb (b) Estimate the hydrostatic force on the deep end 31250 Ib (c) Estimate the hydrostatic force on one of the sides. 5625 (d) Estimate the hydrostatic force on the bottom of the pool. lb

Explanation / Answer

(d) The hydrostatic force on the bottom of the pool will be F = pgh where p is the density, g is the acceleration due to gravity and h is the vertical distance, since the bottom of the pool consists of an inclined plane ofn depth 3ft and deep end 10 ft, therefore, the difference between the heights of the pool from top to bottom will be 20 - 3 = 17ft, therefore, the hydrostatic force on the bottom of the pool will be

F = 62.5 lb/ft3 x 9.8 m/s2 x 17ft = 10412.5 N

(c) On one side of the pool other the bottom side, the hydrostatic force will be, assuming the swimming pool to be a rectangle,
F = p A = 62.5 lb/ft3 x [ 20 x 10 ft2] = 12500 N.
