Question

Ms. Lisa Monnin is the budget director for Nexus Media Inc. She would like to compare the daily travel expenses for the sales staff and the audit staff. She collected the following sample information.

At the 0.10 significance level, can she conclude that the mean daily expenses are greater for the sales staff than the audit staff?

compute the pooled estimate of the population variance.

test statistics.

B)

Listed below are the 25 players on the opening-day roster of the 2016 New York Yankees Major League Baseball team, their salaries, and fielding positions.

Need test statistics

c)

The null and alternate hypotheses are:

H0 : 1 = 2
H1 : 1 2

A random sample of 10 observations from one population revealed a sample mean of 23 and a sample standard deviation of 4. A random sample of 8 observations from another population revealed a sample mean of 26 and a sample standard deviation of 5.

At the 0.05 significance level, is there a difference between the population means?

compute the pooled esticmate of the population variance.

Sales ($) 131 135 146 165 136 142 Audit ($) 130 102 129 143 149 120 139

Explanation / Answer

A)

H0: 1 - 2 = 0 i.e. (1 = 2)

H1: 1 - 2 0 i.e. (1 2)

Assuming population variances are equal, we would have to calculate pooled-variance t-Test keeping Sales SD as S1 and Audi SD as S2

Sp^2= (n1-1)S1^2+(n2-1)S2^2/(n1-1)+(n2-1)

         = (6-1)*12.24^2+(7-1)*15.79^2/5+6

         = 3244.8+3368.76/57

         =204.08

tSTAT=(X1-X2)-(µ1-µ2)/Sp^2(1/n1+1/n2)

       =(142.5-130.2857)-0/204.08(1/6+1/7)

       =12.21/7.9478

       =1.5367

tCRIT is +/- 1.79 and hence cannot reject the null hypothesis

C)

H0: 1 - 2 = 0 i.e. (1 = 2)

H1: 1 - 2 0 i.e. (1 2)

Assuming population variances are equal, we would have to calculate pooled-variance t-Test

Sp^2= (n1-1)S1^2+(n2-1)S2^2/(n1-1)+(n2-1)

         = (10-1)*4^2+(8-1)*5^2/9+7

=19.9375= population variance

tSTAT=(X1-X2)-(µ1-µ2)/Sp^2(1/n1+1/n2)

       =(23-26)-0/19.9375(1/10+1/8)

       =-3/4.4859375

       =-0.668756530825496

tCRIT is +/- 2.1199 and hence cannot reject the null hypothesis
