This data is obtained from witchtrials.dta (Stata).

1.) Use the regression out put to test the hypothesis that the mean of trialindex is the same for location/decades with cold=1 as it is for location/decades with cold = 0, against the alternative that they differ at the 5% significance level.

Explanation / Answer

here null hypothesis H0:mean(cold=1)=mean(cold=0)

and alternate hypothesis H1: mean(cold=1) is not =mean(cold=0)

we use t-test and t=coeff(cold)/SE(cold)=0.3215/0.1477=2.18 and its p-value=0.03 is less than alpha=0.05

so we reject H0 and conclude that mean of trialindex is not the same for location/decades with cold=1 as it is for location/decades with cold = 0, at the 5% significance level.

for cold=1, mean of trialindex=-0.1531+1*0.3215=0.1684

for cold=0, mean of trialindex=-0.1531+0*0.3215=-0.1532

difference of means=0.1684-(-0.1532)=0.3216

we use t-test and t=
