Question

You would like to conduct a study on the prevalence of Down syndrome in the Nordic region.

Calculate the sample size required for your study, given a population standard deviation of 3367, a confidence level of 95% and assuming that you intend to estimate the mean prevalence with a margin of error of 20 cases / 100,000 live birth singletons.

The populations of the Nordic countries vary, but you would like a fixed number of individuals from each country. How would you design your sampling process? Explain your answer.

Name an exposure of interest that you might explore in your study. Explain.

Using data from Table 2, calculate the relative risk of Down syndrome in Iceland compared to Sweden.

Explanation / Answer

The sample size for the survey can be calculated by the formula:

[(Zalpha/2xstandard deviation)/margin error]2

from the given questions we have the following values:

Zalpha/2 =1.96

standard deviation = 3367

Margin error = 0.20

Thus, the estimated sample size is = 1088775612

So, there are 5 nordic countries and if we decide to take equal number of individuals from each country then we should take a sample of about 217755122 from each country.
