Question
Trichotillomania is an illness characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows, or other body hair, sometimes resulting in noticeable bald patches. A pharmaceutical company is trying to decide whether to market a drug for trichotillomania. The pharmacist who designed the drug believes that the drug is very effective, especially when combined with therapy, while the researcher who did the testing with a sample of people suffering from trichotillomania behavior is less convinced Their perspectives are depicted on the following graphs Graph I Graph II NUMBER OF HAIR PULLS PER WEEK NUMBER OF HAIR PULLS PER WEEK 100 90 80 70 60 100 95 90 40 30 20 85 -10 80 Placebo Drug Therapy Combination Placebo Drug Therapy Combination TREATMENT TREATMENT Graph I is presented by because it the effects of the drug Graph II is presented by because it the effects of the drugExplanation / Answer
This is a classic case of mis representation of data. The graphs are essentially the same, the one on the left starts with -10 and the second from 80, that' why the graphs look different.
Graph 1 is presented by Researcher because it lessens the effects of the drug
Graph 2 is presented by Pharmacist because it enhances the effects of the drug
Please remember that the lessening and enhancing is just a perception, due to the different way of representation of graphs. The first looks as if there is no effect as there appear no differences, the second shows difference is quiet tangiable.
