Question
You have been provided with data on the percentage cover and average height of Thalassia testudinum (Turtle grass) along a 50m transect running from the shoreline out to sea at Crandon Park beach. Sampling was condueted using the line transect sampling technique. Based on observations at Crandon Park we could put forth the following questions: Does the percentage cover of Thalassia testudinum (Turtle grass) change with distance from the shore? i) ii) Does the average height of Thalassia testudinum (Turtle grass) change with distance from the shore?
Explanation / Answer
Enter the data and save into Excel as a .csv file.
data1=read.csv(file.choose(),header=T) #importing the data into R
attach(data1) #attaching the dataset
#correlation test to check whether the avg. height of the grass changes with the distance from the shores
cor.test(distance,height)
Pearson's product-moment correlation
data: distance and height
t = 10.144, df = 9, p-value = 3.175e-06
alternative hypothesis: true correlation is not equal to 0
95 percent confidence interval:
0.8453669 0.9895721
sample estimates:
cor
0.9589463
Since p-value is very small, we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the average height of the grass significantly changes with the distance from the shores.
#correlation test to check whether the % cover of the grass changes with the distance from the shores
cor.test(distance,perc.cover)
Pearson's product-moment correlation
data: distance and perc.cover
t = 3.2522, df = 9, p-value = 0.009962
alternative hypothesis: true correlation is not equal to 0
95 percent confidence interval:
0.2417574 0.9264230
sample estimates:
cor
0.7350346
Since p-value is very small, we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the % cover of the grass significantly changes with the distance from the shores.
