Question
Zane is examining two studies involving how different generations classify specified items as either luxuries or necessities. In the first study, the Echo generation is defined to be people ages 18–29. The second study defined the Echo generation to be people ages 20–31. Zane notices that the first study was conducted in 2006 while the second one was conducted in 2008.
(a) Are the two studies inconsistent in their description of the Echo generation?
(b) What are the birth years of the Echo generation?
Explanation / Answer
a. Not neccarily, the conclusion that the age groups are different and hence the 2 studies show inconsistency may not be true. Here' why:
If we take the age group into account:
In 2006, when Zain made this study , it came out that the 18-29 was the Echo generation
Now, in 2008, correctly 2 years after 2006, the same age group of 18-29 will have become older 2 years
This age group is 20-31 now. Note that it' the same age group that Zain found to be the Echo generation in 2008, hence, making a strong conclusion that this age group is the same actually, only that the participants have become older.
b. The birth years of 2006 studies' 18-29 is 2006-29 to 2006 -18 years or 1977 to 1988
The birth years of 2008 studies' 20-31 is 2008-31 to 2008 -20 years or 1977 to 1988, which is the same as in 2006 group, essentially pointing out the fact that the group of participants are actually the same and the studies of 2006-08 are not inconsistent
