Question

5)

A group of 17 men has an average height of M = 68.5 inches. We know that the population mean and standard deviation for men in the US is m=69.1 inches, s = 2.9 inches. (Note that this is a z statistic problem.)

5a) Calculate the z statistic for this sample (not the z score). Answer -0.0853

5b) How does this sample mean compare to the distribution of sample means? In other words, how does the height of the men in the sample compare to the height of men in the general population? Answer i was able to calculate 5a but now I cannot figure out how to calculate 5b. Help me?

Explanation / Answer

5a) TS = (M - m)/(s/sqrt(n))

=(68.5 - 69.1)/(2.9/sqrt(17))

= -0.853056336

b) since TS = -0.853 ,which is negative it means

the height of the men in the sample is less than the height of men in the general population.
