Question

To the right are the outcomes that are possible when a couple has three children. Refer to that list, and find the probability of each event. a. Among three children, there is exactly 1 girl. b. Among three children, there are exactly 3 girls c. Among three children, there are exactly 0 boys. a. What is the probability of exactly 1 girl out of three children? (Type an integer or a simplified fraction) b. What is the probability of exactly 3 girls out of three children? (Type an integer or a simplified fraction) c. What is the probability of exactly 0 boys out of three children? (Type an integer or a simplified fraction)

Explanation / Answer

From the problem we can see that we can have three children(boy and girl) in 8 ways.

A) For the first part, no of ways you can have exactly 1 girl out of three children is 3.

So probability of having exactly 1 girl is 3/8.

B)No of ways of having exactly 3 girls is 1.

So probability of having exactly 3 girls is 1/8.

C)No of ways of having exactly 0 boys is 1.Since 0 boys mean only 3 girls will be born.

So probability of having exactly 0 boys is 1/8.
