Question

Answer the following questions showing all work. Full credit will not be given to answers without work shown. If you use Minitab Express include the appropriate output (copy + paste) along with an explanation. Output without explanation will not receive full credit. Round all answers to 3 decimal places. If you have any questions, post them to the course discussion board.

3. Dr. Jones is concerned that some of his statistics students may be cheating on their homework assignments. He would like to use regression methods to try to determine which students he should be concerned about cheating on homework assignments He creates a simple linear regression model using homework grades to predict exam grades. His exams are proctored so he is relatively confident that his students are not cheating on the exams. His scatterplot with the 95% prediction interval is shown below. Fitted Line Plot for Linear Model 120 110 100 Regression -95% PI 90 80 70 60 50 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 Homework Discuss how this professor could use this plot to identify students who may be cheating. It is expected that it will take you around 50 words to fully discuss this. [10 points]

Explanation / Answer

If the students are not cheating in their homework assignments, then their examination grades should be easily predictable from their HW grades.

By this we mean, the regression line should be able to predict the grades with very little error, so the difference between the actual grade and predicted grade should be negligible.

So in the graph shown above, if the dots lie very close to the regression line, this means that error is very less.

If the dots lie far away, away from the green lines of 95% PI as well, this means that error is high for those students.

So the preofessor should be especially concerned about those two students whose dots lie far below the regression line.

Hope this helps !
