Question

You have been asked by the president of your company to work with and lead a team that she has just formed. In the past, the company has not used employee groups to make decision, but after reading several articles on the topic, the president decided to "try it out". You are faced with three major tasks: 1. You meet your group and the first task is to explain that group involvement/ participation will improve the quality of decision making. Be specific and substantiate why group/team work is beneficial. 2. You will also explain that there are some drawbacks to group decision making. What challenges should the group be aware of so they minimize group disadvantages? 3. Describe the actions you believe the group take to make the team run like a "well-oiled machine"?

Explanation / Answer

1. I would tell the team working together as a team is always beneficial for the company and especially in decision making. When minds from different cultural and educational background come together there will be an opportunity to innovate and come up with an excellent solution. The team members have the special privileged to be a part of this team because it is chosen by the president of the company. So all of them are very talented and can contribute towards coming up with a well-thought decision. They call can share their ideas and concerns regarding the decision to be made and we will brainstorm to see which idea fits the better with our organizational culture.

2. The people in the team might have a biased mindset towards specific things and I want all of them to leave that mindset and keep an open mind towards new thoughts and ideas from others. The two different team members might have some personal issues and that can ruin the good work environment. Not all the people will contribute sometimes when they see that just one or two people are trying to dominate the process. The communication between the members can create a gap in the process if it is not well planned. Too many ideas from all the members can also create confusion and might consume a lot of time to find the right solution.

3. First, we need to create a good communication plan and helps everyone to interact with each other effectively. We need to set clear boundaries for the team members when they are working together relating to their responsibilities. The team members should never bring up their personal issues and discuss it with others. The members should not be biased towards any option available and give 100% to come up with something new and sustainable. All of them should know each other very well and they should share the work based on their strengths and weaknesses.
