Question
Provide one example of one of the possible relationships between variables. Make sure that all five possible relationships are covered at least several times between you and your colleagues.
There is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the variables. That is, x causes y. For example, water causes plants to grow, poison causes death, and heat causes ice to melt. 1. 2. There is a reverse cause-and-effect relationship between the variables. That is, y causes x. For example, suppose a researcher believes excessive coffee consumption causes nervousness, but the researcher fails to consider that the reverse situation may occur That is, it may be that an extremely nervous person craves coffee to calm his or her nerves The relationship between the variables may be caused by a third variable. For example, if a statistician correlated the number of deaths due to drowning and the number of cans of soft drink consumed daily during the summer, he or she would probably find a significant relationship. However, the soft drink is not necessarily responsible for the deaths, since both variables may be related to heat and humidity 3. 4. There may be a complexity of interrelationships among many variables. For example, a researcher may find a significant relationship between students' high school grades and college grades. But there probably are many other variables involved, such as IQ, hours of study, influence of parents, motivation, age, and nstructors The relationship may be coincidental. For example, a researcher may be able to find a significant relationship between the increase in the number of people who are exercising and the increase in the number of people who are committing crimes. But common sense dictates that any relationship between these two values must be due to coincidence 5.Explanation / Answer
1. Cause and Effect:
The increase in the price of a nonessential commodity will decrease its demand. People are not going to buy it because its price has increased and they will prefer to buy another item of same type but lower price.
2: Inverse Cause and effect:
We may find a direct relationship between numner of persons living secluded and alone with the person being in depression, but it is likely that the relationship is switched, The more depressed a person is the more he will try to remain secluded and alone.
3:
The statistician may try to find a relationship between the increasing price of edible oil and vegitables, but more appropriate would be if both the prices are increasing due to increase in the price of transportation cost which was due to increse in price of petrol.
Soo researcher should find a relationship between price of petrol and other two variables(Edible oil price and vegitable price).
4: The Complex interrelationship between varables:
The mental growth of a kid may seem to depend on the diet of the kid, but it may depend on lots of variables like diet, parental care, school environment, friends, education system and other variables.
5: Coincidental relationship:
The researcher may find a linear relationship between number of mobile phones bought in a month and number of burgularies in a bank. But in real its pure coincidence.
