3. You are the administrative assistant for a division chief in a large holding company that owns several hotels and theme parks. You and the division chief have just come from the CEO’s office, where you were informed that the guest complaints related to housekeeping and employee attitude are increasing. Your on-site managers have mentioned some tension among workers, but have not considered it unusual. The CEO and your division chief instruct you to investigate. Suggest what type of exploratory, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies you can carry out in this situation. Briefly explain what you would measure in each of these studies and how it would benefit the company?

When it comes to investigating situations, studies are a great way to research those situations. In this particular question, there are three studies I feel would be most appropriate: Descriptive, Casual, and Qualitative and Quantitative. Descriptive as defined by Cooper & Schindler are formalized studies structured with clearly stated hypotheses or investigative questions. Casual is defined as research that attempts to reveal a causal relationship between variables (A produces B or causes B to occur). Qualitative research is defined as interpretative techniques that seek to describe, decode, translate, and otherwise come to terms with the meaning of certain phenomenon; a fundamental approach of exploration including in-depth interviews, group interviews, participant observation, and many others. Quantitative research is the precise count of some behavior, knowledge, opinion, or attitude. There are many different types of research that could be utilized in this situation. The three such types of research that make sense and can be used to study guest complaints in relations to housekeeping and employee attitude are as follows:

a. Exploratory Research: This is the first research I would conduct. The exploratory research will help collect our initial thoughts. It will provide different ideas, clarify issues that are pertinent to the situation, and uncover new variables to research. This research will create more research questions for us to explore; thus, creating alternatives to the problem, which may help us solve the problem quicker and more thoroughly.

b. Descriptive Research: This will help define, predict, profile, and examine associative relationships of different issues in this situation. The research will also provide more insight into the actual research problem created by the problem of guest complaints in relation to housekeeping and employee attitude. With this research, we can create a more flexible solution to the research problem. As a first option, I will recommend doing exploratory research first because it is designed to provide different possible set ideas, clarify relevant issues and also explains uncovered variables associated with the problem. And define alternatives for solving the problem efficiently.

c. Applied/Casual Research: This would be my last research type that would be appropriate to the situation. This research will create the cause and effect relationship between the variables related to the research question. This research will be beneficial to tying together all of the previous research done, and creating a well-rounded answer to the initial research questions. This will also help with estimating the outcomes of whatever action we may take to customer complaints and employee attitude. This will help create the best possible answer to solve the problem most effectively and efficiently.
