Question

Use your PHYS 112 knowledge and the Lorentz force to BRIEFLY explain the following. a. Why sunspots are darker than the surrounding surface of the Sun. b. Why solar prominences are typically visible as loops? It is my personal opinion that 6-weeks is short to cover PHYS 112 in a matter which is "equivalent" to the same course offered during the fall and spring semesters (e.g., we did not cover all the topics presented in a 16-week semester) a. Now that you're completed the course, and ignoring schedule issues, would you prefer that the course was 8-weeks long, and therefore moved more slowly from day to day, and/or met 4 days a week? Why? b. Would you have registered for this course if it was offered as an 8-week course, and met from 24 May-28 July? Why?

Explanation / Answer

(a) Sunspots appear darker than the surface of the sun as they are much cooler than Sun. They are the region of high magnetic activities.

The temperature of sun spots(3000° C)is low in comparison to the surface of sun(7000°C).

If they exist independently, they would glow brightly.

(B)

Solar prominences are just ionized gases, charged particles etc. Sun also has magnetic field produced by its internal dynamo, we know lorentz force,

Fl= q(VxB) , so these charged particles travelling in magnetic field experience lorentz force and form loops.

(Charged particle in magnetic field traverses a Circular path)
