Question
Below are some research questions. For each one, decide if you think it is best answered by qualitative or quantitative research, and explain why.
1. Bullying is an important problem, particularly in middle schools, but not much is known about how students who are the targets of bullying deal with the problem. What strategies do they use to avoid or confront bullies? To whom do they turn for help? How does bullying affect their life inside and outside of school?
2. Bullying is an important problem, especially in middle schools, but not much is known about the true extent of the problem. What percentage of children experience bullying? Are there differences in rates of experienced bullying by gender or race?
Explanation / Answer
Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research.
Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into usable statistics. It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and other defined variables – and generalize results from a larger sample population.
1. In the first research problem, it is asked regarding strategy, help and affect of bullying which goes with the definition of Qualitative Research.
2. In the second problem, numerical data like percentage, difference rates are been talked about hence it goes more with definition of Quantitative Research.
