Compound Probability and Fraction Addition So far in this section, you have worked with probabilities where there is one specific outcome that is desired. Today you will investigate probabilities of compound events, that is, events with combinations of outcomes. You will be interested in finding the probability that either one of the events or the other event occurs. Think about these questions as you work with your study team: How is this probability related to the probability of a single event? Either what, or what, is a success? Does this answer make sense? 2-40. A bag holds 40 marbles, and each marble is either yellow or green. If you reach into the bag and randomly pull out a marble, you have an 80% chance of pulling out a yellow marble. a. How many of the marbles are green? Show how you know b. How could you add or remove marbles in the original bag to change the probability of drawing a green marble to 50%? Additional Challenge: Design a new bag of marbles that contains at least 50 marbles that are yellow, green, or red. How many of each color should you put in the bag to create a 25% probability of drawing red? Is there more than one possible way? c.

Explanation / Answer

since there are 40 marble of yellow or green.

since probability of yellow marble=0.8

so proprotion of yellow marble=0.8 and proportion of green=1-0.8=0.2

number of green marble=40*0.2=8

(b) since number of yellow marble=32 and green=8

if we want green marble to have 50% probability , so each of green and yellow should be equal.

if we remove 24 yellow marble then there will be 8 yellow and 8 green marble

then probability of green=green/(green+yellow)=8/(8+8)=1/2=0.5 (50%)

if we add 24 green marble then there will be 32 yellow marble and 32 green marble

then then probability of green=green/(green+yellow)=32/(32+32)=1/2=0.5 (50%)

(c) here we need the number of marble of each color out of 50 marble.

then we will be able to find the required answer
