Question

Empirical probability. I have 50 students 25 female 25 male. When everyone was scored on a test 44 people got grades that were an E (abcdef) or higher. 21 males got grades e or higher & 23 females got grades that were E or higher. Out of 12 E grades, 10 belong to two men and only to belong to women. What is the probability for the following questions. A. Randomly selected person being in grade E or above B.randomly selected person being a male in grade E or above? C. Randomly selected male being in grade E or above? D. Why are the results different? Explanation / Answer

total number with grade F=50-44 =6

a) probability a Randomly selected person being in grade E or above =44/50=0.88 ( as there are 44 people out of 50 with a grade E or above)

b) probability a .randomly selected person being a male in grade E or above =21/25=0.84 (as there are 21 males with E or above grade out of 25 males )

c) probability a Randomly selected male being in grade E or above =21/44=0.4773 (as there are 21 males out of 44 with grade E or above)

D) as probability in part b and c are conditional ; depending on prior probability which is in part b ; being a male and in part C ; being in grade E or above. As theses are different so does our calculated probability
