Question
In Teaching of Psychology, a study investigated whether final examination performance is affected by whether students take a practice test. Students in an introductory psychology class at Pennsylva- nia State University were initially divided into three groups based on their class standing: Low, Medium, or High. Within each group, students were randomly assigned to either attend a review session or take a practice test prior to the final. One goal of the study was to compare the mean final examination scores of the six groups of students. We may assume that the divisions for class standing were selected by the researcher.
(a). Is this study experimental or observational? Why?
(b). Identify the response, all factors, factor-levels, and treatments.
Explanation / Answer
Ans:
a)Experimental study
As we are giving the treatment (i.e practice test, review session) to the experimental group,so experimental study.
An experiment is a method of applying treatments to a group and record the effects. An experiment will have two basic elements:a control and a treatment .
b)Response :is the mean final examination scores of the six groups of students.
Factors:Students's class standing Low,medium, high
Treatment:practice test,review session
