Explanation / Answer

I was on a training for more than three months in one of the plants of a Japanese automobile manufacturer. The culture of the organization came in front of me in terms of a cultural shock. The first cultural difference was encountered by me in terms of how they interact with each other. While, in my earlier company, there was a culture of yelling at each other, in this company the employees always was talking to each other with great respect and politeness. Furthermore, people are reluctant to say a clear 'Yes' or 'No' on any matter and it is the context and their behavior from which we need to guess their preference.

The second crucial part of the culture was their focus on very minute details which we did not have in our company. Even when they are doing cleanliness of the floor, they are focused and doing it professionally maintaining standards of operation. Standards of operations are available for every single small component of work and people are expected to follow standards. Their desire to change the standard is always reflected in terms of change requests which they used to submit to the management and stick to the previous standard until it gets approved and modified. This was also new to me because in our company when people think any opportunity to modify a standard, they almost do it immediately just by verbally informing the management.

These experiences were an eye-opener for me and in most of the cases, I agree with the culture of this organization. For, example, keeping a standard for every standard work, following them rigidly, and modifying them with a system of the workflow is the great system because they prevent mistakes in operation, improves quality, efficiency, and standardization. This reduces the stress on an employee who knows what the organization expects and the expectation is visible in black and white in terms of the standards themselves.
