Question

A library worked named Jim is going through the returned books. Books are constantly arriving, and Jim's quirky boss, Quinten, forces his workers to sort books until they sort a book with a title beginning with the letter Q. How many books will Jim have to sort until he gets a break?

1.) One specific outcome is

A-1,2,3,4....

B-0

C-594

2.) One specific event is NOT

A-Sorting less than 50 books

B-falling asleep before he finds a Q book

C-Sorting more than 1000 books

D-sorting an even number of books

3.)The sample space is

A- {10,20,30...}

B- [1, number of books owned]

C- {1,2,3,4,5,......}

D- {0,1,2,3,4.....}

E- {1,2,....number of books owned}

Explanation / Answer

1) Here one specific event has to be a numebr greater than 0, because he has to have sorted at least 1 book before a break. Therefore b is wrong. Also a is not true because we are asked a single outcome but a) contains many outcomes.

Therefore c) 594 is the correct single outcome here.

2) One specific event is NOT sorting an even number of books because there could be multiple events here: 2,4,6,... and so on

Therefore D is the correct answer here.

3) The sample space would be any integer greater than 0, that is the net of the natural numbers.

Also both 1 and the number of books owned should be the part of the sample soace. Therefore the correct sample space representation is B- [1, number of books owned]
