Humerus bones from the same species of animal tend to have approximately the same length to width ratios. It is known that species A has a mean ratio of 8.5. Suppose 41 fossils of humerus bones were unearthed at an archeological site in East Africa where Species A is believed to have inhabited. The average and the standard deviation of length to width ratios of the sample bones were 9.26 and 1.20 respectively. Using the P-Value methodology, we wish to determine whether or not the bones are, indeed, from species A. Use a level of significance of 5%.Explanation / Answer
The idea is to find wether 8.5 ( the mean ratio of sp.A lies within the limits of 5% significance or 95% Ci)
Use the params to normalize the variable,
So, Zstat = Xbar - Mu / (Sigma/sqrt(N))
= (9.26-8.5)/( 1.2/sqrt(41))
= 4.055 which has a p value of almost 0
Since 0 is less than 5% or .05 we conclude that bones are NOT from species A, as Z value is to high
