Question

I need a discussion respionse to the following peers discussion post

1)      Workers in many occupations want a stronger voice in the workplace and there is increasing recognition that this is a fundamental human right. Do you believe that voice in the workplace is a fundamental human right? Why or why not?

I do believe that having a voice in the workplace is a fundamental human right. Our text tells us that the objectives of labor relations based on a relationship of voice, equity, and efficiency (Budd, 2017, p. 5). Finding a balance between the three is essential. To find this balance labor laws exist to allow workers to bargain wages, hours, and conditions that they see unfit. Our text tells us that these legal protections exist to allow workers to equalize power between themselves and their employer, hoping to find this balance (Budd, 2017, p. 11). These in my opinion are considered basic human rights.

2)      Do you believe Unions are still relevant today? Why or why not?

As long as we still have people working Unions can still be relevant. The reasons and possible conditions of work may have changed significantly since the start of union’s, but every new era comes with new problems. Our text tells us that today some of the critical issues include disparities in labor market, low wage workers trying to move out of poverty and support families, and problems with work life balance especially for mothers (Budd, 2017, p. 29). Problems still exist making unions still relevant today.

3)      Has Union membership increased or decreased since World War II in the U.S.? Why do you think that is?

Table 12.1 in our text gives us labor relations statistics around the world today, including the United States. The union density is falling at 11% with key features including exclusive representation, business unionism, and more detailed contracts (Budd, 2017, p. 428). One of the main reasons membership has decreased is labor laws have increased creating safer working conditions, minimum wages, and controlling hours worked.
