Question

For problems 7, 8, 9 and 10, please do the following: a. Give the null and alternative hypotheses b. Give the critical value(s) of the test c. Give the test statistic d. Give a well thought out and well written conclusion e. Give the p-value or the range of the p-value f. Give the error that could have possibly been made 7. The Medassist Pharmaceutical Company makes a pill intended for children susceptible to seizures. The pi is supposed to contain 20.0 mg of phenolb An independent consulting company wants to know if the pills are acceptable at the = 0.01 significance level. A randon sample of 20 pills yielded = 21.3 and s = 3.1.

Explanation / Answer

H0: = 5.5      H1: < 5.5

With 35                  DF and a = 0.05 (one-tailed test), we get critical value to be -1.69

               tSTAT=x-/S/sqrt(n)

                      =5.13-5.5/1.91/sqrt(36)

                      =-0.37/1.91/6

                      =-1.16

Since -1.69<-1.16 and hence it does not fall within the rejection region and hence we cannot reject H0.

The p-value is 0.12695. Result is not significant at 0.05.

There are two types of error which can possibly be made- Type 1 error and type 2 error. Type 1 error is the error of rejecting a true null hypothesis. Type 2 error is the failure to reject false null hypothesis
