Question
1.According to a recent survey, Americans get an average 7 hours of sleep with a standard deviation of 0.9 hours per night. A random sample of 25 citizens in Alaska revealed the average number of hours slept last month was 6 hours and 36 minutes (6.6 hours). Is it reasonable to conclude that people in Alaska sleep different than the typical American? = 0.1.

Explanation / Answer
Ho : Average hours of sleep for Alaska is same as AMericans, which is 7 hours. = 7 hrs
Ha : average number of hours sleep for Alaska is not equal to or different to AMericans which is 7 hours. 7 hours
(b) Decision Rule: We will reject the null hypothesis if the sample data is statistically significant. Where significane level or alpha is 0.1.
(c) Test statistic where population standard deviation = 0.9 hours per night. We will use Z - test here because population standard deviation is given here.
Z = (xbar - H )/ (/ n) = (6.6 - 7)/ (0.9/25) = (-0.4)/ (0.18) = -2.22
(d) Here Zcritical = 1.645
so here Z > Zcritical so we can reject the null hypothesis.
(c) We can conclude that Alaska have different sleeping times/pattern than AMericans.
