Question

You are the manager of a restaurant for a fast-food franchise.Last month the population mean wait time at the drive–through windows for other stores in your area was µ = 3.7 minutes.You select a random sample of 64 orders at your store.The sample waiting time is X = 3.57 minutes with a sample standard deviation of S = 0.8 minutes.

At the 0.05 level of significance ( = 0.05), is there evidence that your store has a different mean waiting time?(Hint: use the 7 steps of the hypothesis testing procedure and t charts to test the claim.)

Because the sample size is 64, do you need to be concerned about the shape of the population distribution when using the t test in (a)?Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

1.Ho:u=3.7

Ha: U NOT EQUAL TO 3.7

s=0.8 X=3.57 n=64

2. test stat= X-u/s/sqrt(n)

=3.57-3.7/0.8/8 = -0.13/0.1 =-1.3

p-value corresponding z=-1.3 is 0.0938 ,since its a two-tailed test ,the p-value is more than the significance lvel 0.05 hence we cant reject the null hypothesis .

Conclusion: the average wait time is 3.7 minutes

There is no minimum sample size for the t test to be valid.
