Question

A researcher is interested in whether disturbing people while they dream has an effect on temperament. Groups of normal adults are randomly assigned to one of three conditions. One group is interrupted five times during the night but never during a dream. A second group is aroused the same number of times, but only twice during a dream. A third group is awakened an equal number of times, each time during a dream. The procedures are earned out in a sleep lab on six consecutive nights. During each day, subjects are interviewed and given teats to evaluate how anxious or irritable they are. Each subject is given a score over the entire six-day period, with high scores indicating very upset individuals These data arc below: Test at alpha = .05 whether dream interruption has an effect on temperament using a one-way ANOVA. Fill in the ANONA table below with the appropriate values. Make a decision whether or not to reject the null hypothesis. Specify the comparison value from the F-table used in your decision. Write your F statistic.

Explanation / Answer

a) Corrected Mean, CM = Total of all observation2/N = 9.4667
SS(Total) = sum of squares of all observation - CM = 429.7333
SS(Between) = (Total of sum for each treatment/n) - CM = 322.1333
SS(Within) = SS(Total) - SS(Between) = 107.6
MS(Between) = SS(Between)/df(Between) = 161.0667
MS(WIthin) = SS(Within)/df(Within) = 8.9667
F = MS(Between)/MS(Within) = 17.96283

b) Fcritical(2,12,0.05) = 3.8853, since F < Fcritical(2,12,0.05) Reject the null hypothesis
