Question
Adding an additional comment onto a previously posted question.. Reports have suggested that the expanded recall on airbags will affect 25% of all airbags installed in Toyota vehicles up through model year 1999. Question 1) My parents have 2 Toyota cars from model year 1998. Each has multiple airbags. Suppose that only the driver side airbag is implicated in the recall. What is the probability that I will be affected by the recall ? Question 2) Suppose that both the passenger and the driver side airbags are implicated in the recall. Now what is the probability that I will be affected by the recall ? the question I had was: If is costs 100$ for Toyota to replace an airbag or either type (passenger or driver side), what is the expected cost for Toyota to address the airbag issue?
Explanation / Answer
1) P(1 car being affected) = 0.25
either one of the parents car is affected or both are affected.
P(will be affected) = 0.25*0.75 + .75*0.25 + 0.25*0.25 = 0.4375
2) P(1 car being affected) = 0.25*0.75 + 0.75*0.25 + 0.25*0.25 = 0.4375
either one of the parents car is affected or both are affected.
P(will be affected) = 0.4375*0.5625 + .5625*0.4375 + 0.4375*0.4375 = 0.6836
