Question

Mr. Schwinn was taking inventory at his shop. He sells bicycles and tricycles. He counted 206 wheels and 170 pedals. How many bicycles and tricycles does he have in his store? (page 274) To receive credit, equations must be determined and then solved by some method. No credit will be given for only answers. You are given $893 in one, five, and ten dollar bills. There are 165 bills. There are twice as many five-dollar bills as there are ones and tens combined. How many bills of each type are there? To receive credit, equations must be determined and then solved by some method. No credit will be given for only answers.

Explanation / Answer

1. Let the number of bicycles be x and the number of tricycles be y. Thus the number of tyres is 2x+3y=206

Also. The number of pedals will be 2x+2y=170

Subtracting these equations to solve for x and y gives y=36 and x=98

Thus there are 98 bicycles and 36 is the number of tricycles
