Question

A group of homes in a community were sampled to look at the relationship between exposure to secondhand smoke and asthma in children. The following two-by-two table shows the number of children in the sample and their exposure and outcome.

Calculate asthma incidence in the exposed and unexposed.

Show all your steps/work for full points. Carry probabilities to at least 4 decimal places for intermediate steps. Round your final answer to two or three decimal places. For extremely small probabilities, it is important to have 1 or two significant digits (non-zero digits), such as 0.000001 or 0.000034, etc.

Asthma No Asthma Total Second Hand Smoke 402 153 555 No Second Hand Smoke 56 250 306 Total 458 403 861

Explanation / Answer

Incidence rate is defined as the number of newly diagnosed cases of a disease divided by the number of people who are at risk.

Hence in the exposed the incidence would be ,

I = 402/555 = 0.724

In the unexposed the asthma incidence would be,

I = 56/306 = 0.183
