Question
Shannon collected data from two groups of women at a college campus on perceptions of nutrition messages in the media. Participation in the survey was voluntary. When she analyzed her body mass index (BMI) data she found a bimodal distribution. Her advisor told her to group all of the participants together and report the average BMI value. Shannon's friends think she should have analyzed her data more carefully by categorizing the two groups of women by BMI groups based on the bimodal distribution. By reporting the mean BMI, did Shannon distort the interpretation of her data?
Explanation / Answer
No, Shannon did not distort the interpretation of her data
this is because the average mean would have been same whether she has distributed the women into two catagories or not
the dividing of catagories and then finding separate means and the finding the overall mean is not different from the original mean. It is just anouther way of calculating the average
