Question
The following was reported in the news recently- Sparkling pomegranate soda that was infused with legal marijuana was delivered to a state pot shop. More than 300 bottles starting exploding on the store shelves causing a sticky mess. What caused the soda bottles to explode? (To receive full credit explain in detail. Also, you must use complete sentences!) If you started with 10 bacteria how many subsequent generations would it take to reach a population of 80 bacteria? If you inoculated a tube with 25 bacteria how many bacteria would be in the tube after 7 hours if the generation time was 30 minutes?Explanation / Answer
Answer 1
It might be possible that one of the component must have contain yeast. Yeast convert sugar into alcohol and release Carbon di oxide. When soda bottles were kept for long time it must have given yeast cell enough time to ferment the sugar and generate enough of Carbon dioxide which must have increase the pressure inside the bottle. When pressure become unbearable for the bottle they started exploding
Answer 2.
In each division bacteria cells divide themselves into two daughter cells
If we start with 10 cells, then generation number of generation needed to reach 80 cells will be as follow
After first generation, there will be 20 cells. After second generation, there will be 40 cells and after third generation there will be 80 cells. So, it will take 3 generation to reach 80 cells if we start from 10 cells
Answer 3.
Given generation time is 30 mins means after 30 mins there will be doubling of population
Number of cells in the inoculum 25
In seven hours’ number of generation will be 7/0.5 = 14
So, there will be 14 generation after 7 hours
Number of cells after number of cells(2n) n = number of generation
25*214 = 25 * 16384
409600 is the number of cells after 7 hours
